Titanium White v Mixing White

I bought some mixing white after seeing a video in which it was used but by the time I came to think about it again, I’d forgotten its purpose – how was it different, and why use it? This video explains: Titanium white is opaque and mutes and ‘pastelises’ a pigment while mixing white brightens the colour of the mixed pigment, maintains the colour saturation, and only subtly tints it. I am a sucker for idiot’s guides to areas I have little or no grasp on, and while I’d read somewhere about cubism being derived from an attempt to represent many rather than just one perspective, having that idea visualised for me makes a big difference. Part 5 – personal project preparatory work, digital seas

Flamepainter for iPad is a free app and it’s wonderful for quick, if somewhat erratic, sketches. The process is easy to work out – choose a brush, set the size and other parameters, change the colour if you want to, draw. The last part is the trickiest as the ‘light’ zooms around the canvas as if possessed. Best plan is to try one combination of brush and speeds and get used to it before altering anything else! I think I saw this on TV a while ago, knowing nothing about her or her work. If this is what I saw, there is a point when her past lover appears in front of her as she plays out her two minutes of silent looking with strangers. It was heart breaking. This was a revelation and really supported the course materials. Details such as the ideal tilt, and brush shape that aren’t covered in the text, and the concept of the bead – that leading edge of dilute medium that sits at the bottom of any horizontal stroke – which I’d never heard of and had no idea of its actual use. I think I’m working my way towards using the underneath of the bypass for this. I liked the exploratory sketches and the brutal nature of the concrete, which has nevertheless been appropriated by humans, and how it sits in the middle of a natural environment of clay, rocks, uncultivated vegetation, and water.
