Two questions asked of me recently, both by tutors, make this a very pertinent discussion. Before starting this module, my previous tutor wondered aloud why I wasn’t on the Fine Art (FA) pathway as my body of work seemed more of a fit for that; and currently, during our wide ranging introductory video meeting, the question, did I see myself as a painter, came up. Part 4, project 5, exercise 2 – groups of figures

I have posted these elsewhere although I had this exercise in mind when I made the sketches. This first group of sketches is from the live web stream provided by NASA/JPL of the teams building the 2020 Mars rover.  This is conte/charcoal and less a group as individuals within the group. The build takes place in a clean room, hence the suits and masks. The teams move slowly and carefully, as you might expect, which is ideal for me. Part 3 project 5 exercise 2 townscape

Another dreaded attempt at forcing buildings into a proper line on a page. This time I’ve used a soft 7B pencil so I don’t get too involved in sharp corners and points. It’s a little childlike but better than I’d expected, particularly as one of my cats settled on my knee while I was drawing. This is our car park, conveniently empty of vehicles. This may not be strictly ‘line’ but I think it may be close enough.
