Assignment 2 self evaluation

Demonstration of technical and visual skills – materials, techniques, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills. This is hard to judge in terms of skills. I’ve had conversations about realism versus expression and the vague feeling that preferring the latter is some sort of cop out. At one level I know this is not true – I believe I can draw and I have pre-OCA drawings I return to occasionally to remind myself – but I felt the need to do a couple more just for the record. Part 2, Project 4, exercise 3

Material differences. This had me thinking of textures and also of one of the sketches I’d done earlier which features a series of door frames through from the kitchen to the front of the house. Based on this, I took an A3 sized cartridge sheet and sketched out the key vertical and horizontal lines associated with the doors, the lintels, the ceiling, a book case off in the distance, and reflections of a shelf in the kitchen via a long mirror. Composition. Building on yesterday’s ’round the house’ sketches, it wasn’t difficult to find an area that seemed to lend itself to framing a composition as it’s already framed. This drawing (white charcoal on pink sugar paper) focused largely on the sofa as I could see it through the doorway, but there are so many doorways, like a hall of mirrors (and with a mirror on one wall too), forming a dark tunnel towards the front room. Part 2, Project 3, exercise 4

Monochrome which I’ve discovered at this late stage in life, doesn’t mean black and white, it means mono [one] chrome [colour]. I’ve tackled a jug and an onion on a plain white surface with a white background. I’ve been watching Platon (Antoniou)  [Abstract: the art of design; Netflix] whose photography is stark and through that, more revealing than it might otherwise be, and found myself nudged in that direction. Grey scale exercise(s)

Probably the first of several so I’ll collect them here. Hopefully, I’ll remember to come back! I’m still besotted with gesso so this is a pre-prepped A5 sheet in a sketchbook on which I’d blended dark grey charcoal before applying the gesso. The next day (today), I used each of a series of graded charcoals to make the boxes, finger-blending line 1, cross-hatching line 2, and describing small circles in line 3. Part 2, Project 2, Exercise 3 mixed media

After some very helpful feedback from my tutor who, in essence, said to just get on and experiment [apologies if I’ve made an interpretation of convenience there!], this is an A3 piece, gesso prepped, and then layered up with pastels and oil crayons. I’ve also dribbled and dabbed inks onto the red vase in homage to the pattern it has across the front. Part 2, Project 3, exercise 3

Experimenting with mixed media. I should be in my element here as I’ve never been afraid to mix anything with anything else – gouache and pencil and ink and acrylic and bits of collage and sometimes a drag or two of oil pastel. I’m guessing some sort of discipline about choice might be more important in this task though. Replicated from a previous post in which my ability to keep track of my parts, projects, and exercises was exposed to be lacking. After some tutor feedback encouraging experimentation (also ‘try not to make a picture’ but let’s park that one for now!), this is what throwing acrylic gesso-prepped support [<– new word for my artist’s lexicon], pastels, oil pastels, and inks looks like in a first draft [is there a word for that?]. Quantifying, describing, and evaluating art

I feel as though I know nothing of art; no schools or movements, no artists beyond the most obvious, and no real way of searching, researching, or critically evaluating my own or anyone else’s work. It’s alarming; I should have some way of sparking from what I can see to what it reminds me of somewhere in the artistic canon, but I don’t. I can follow the breadcrumb trail of the course materials and ‘look’ at still life or shading or composition, but as yet I have nothing to say about it. Part 2, Project 3, Exercise 2

Love a bit of consistency! [Edit: turns out this is Project 3, not 2] This exercise is quite the opposite of the previous one in which line was paramount; this is about building up shade and tone using the flat edges of pastels and blending without too much regard for detail. This first attempt – on four pieces of A4 black sugar paper taped together at the back – uses oil pastels and also charcoals to get the feel of broad sweeps again after all that tickling the paper with pencils.
